{Magical Memory Monday} Club Cool

Back in December 2010, I went to Disney World for training. While touring Epcot®, we had the opportunity to visit Club Cool. Now, I don’t think I had ever even been in this store. And, if I had, I know I had never tasted all the different flavors of soda offered in the soda fountain.

At Club Cool, guests can cool down and sample some soft drinks from around the world for free.

I enjoy the flavors of Smart Watermelon (China) and Fanta Kolita (Costa Rica). During my trip in December 2010, I tried MOST of the flavors offered.

I couldn’t wait to take the kids here during UFT 2011. I knew Emma and Logan would sample just the sodas that ‘sounded’ good – there is a description of each on the fountain. But, what I was really hoping was that Isaac would try Beverly. Beverly, from Italy, is said to have a bitter flavor. And, sure enough, he tried it!

You can see from his face above that it doesn’t taste very good. But, he is such a trooper that I knew he’d give it a shot – once. He didn’t feel the need to taste it again.

I’m not one to play along when someone says “You’ve got to taste this. It is so gross!”. Ummm… I’ll just take your word for it. I’m NOT a trooper. I don’t purposely try grody things just for the fun of it.

Two years ago, while in Disney World in December, I was able to see the extravagant gingerbread displays in several of the resorts. To say they blew me away is a complete understatement. I hope to some day take my kiddos to Disney World over the holidays to see all of the holiday magic Disney bestows on the parks and the resorts. I posted about the gingerbread displays earlier this year so I won’t bore you with a thorough description. You can read all about it on my G is for Gingerbread post. But, I will repost a few of my favorite pictures.

Two years ago at this time, I was planning a week-long trip to WDW without my kiddos. I was meeting three of my fellow 3D Travel Agents for a week of training at Walt Disney World. It was a long week, and I learned a LOT. But, we also got to enjoy ourselves a bit. I’m so glad I was able to spend that week with Amy, Cindy, and Lindsey. I hope I get the opportunity to train again soon.

Christmas at Walt Disney World!

With this week being Thanksgiving week, I’ve decided to do a holiday countdown for those of you who are lucky enough to visit Disney World during the holidays. Here are a few things you shouldn’t miss while you’re there:

Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party
The Gingerbread exhibits in the resorts
The Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights (12/3)
Mickey’s Jingle Jungle Parade (12/10)
Epcot’s Candlelight Processional (12/17)
Holiday sleigh Rides at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground (12/24)

On select nights throughout November and December, guests can attend Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party in Disney’s Magic Kingdom. This event does require a special purchase ticket. A normal theme park ticket will not get you into this event. Party goers are given a wrist band to show that they have purchased the special admission ticket. Only those guests with tickets are allowed onto rides and attractions after the party starts (at 7:00 PM).
Whether you have tickets to Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party (MVMCP) or not, you can watch the special Castle Lighting Ceremony which takes place about 6:30PM. Since both party goers and day guests can attend this popular show, it is advised that you arrive at least 15 minutes early to get a good viewing seat.
As the show begins, the Disney characters are trying to get into the holiday spirit, but they can’t decide how to decorate the castle. So, they ask Cinderella since she is the one who lives in the castle. Cinderella asks the fairy godmother for help. As the fairy godmother appears on the balcony, the castle is transformed by thousands of shimmering lights.
There are many other party features that guests can enjoy. From Mickey’s Once Upon a Christmastime Parade (complete with an appearance by Santa himself) to an exclusive holiday fireworks show to complimentary cookies and hot chocolate to a magical snow fall on Main Street, USA, there is something magical for everyone to enjoy. I highly recommend purchasing tickets to this event if you will be visiting Walt Disney World during the holidays.

I purchased Water Park Fun & More tickets for this year’s trip to Walt Disney World. The kids really wanted to go to the water parks this year, and I thought they would love DisneyQuest, as well. And, we were not disappointed.

We visited DisneyQuest twice during our trip, and Isaac attended a birthday party there for my boss’s son. Everyone had a really good time.

Who? There’s a little something for everyone at DisneyQuest. From virtual reality to 3D to vintage arcade games to interactive pinball, there’s something to keep everyone occupied for hours.

What? DisneyQuest is an indoor, interactive theme park. Inside guests will find five floors of games and attractions.

When is it open? DisneyQuest is open seven days a week. The hours of operation are Sunday – Thursday 11:30AM – 10:00PM and Friday – Saturday 11:30AM – 11:00PM.

Where is it? You can find DisneyQuest in Downtown Disney.

Why? DisneyQuest is a great escape on a no-park day. It’s a great place to go after the parks close or on a rainy day. Give it a try. You won’t be disappointed.

What did we think? I think it’s definitely worth the price. We had a really good time, and we are looking forward to going again in the future.

{Foodie Friday} Earl of Sandwich

Where is it? Downtown Disney

Who’s there? Anyone who loves a good, hot sandwich! The only characters you’ll find at Earl of Sandwich are those you bring with you.

What is there to eat? Oh my!! Only the best hot sandwiches!! Breakfast offers include hot ham & Swiss sandwiches, breakfast BLT’s, and much more. For lunch and dinner, you can find sandwiches with names like The Earl’s Club, The Full Montagu, and the Caprese. Diners can also enjoy soups, wraps, muffins, and salads. Kids can enjoy grilled cheese, a pizza sandwich, and more.

When? As I mentioned above, Earl of Sandwich is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Why? Have you looked at those sandwiches?!? Really, this is some good food. And, it’s on the Disney Dining Plan so you can use quick-service credits at Earl of Sandwich.

What do we think about it? This was our first trip to Earl of Sandwich. A co-worker of mine raves about their sandwiches so I wanted to give it a try. I was NOT disappointed. We actually ate there twice during our stay.

{Top 4} Things I Loved About Caribbean Beach

With all this talk about our stay at Caribbean Beach and, specifically, the pirate room, I thought I would create a “Top 5” list of the things I loved about this resort.

1. The resort grounds – The resort grounds are spectacular. You truly feel as if you’ve stepped into a Caribbean beach resort. The white sand beaches, the lush green landscaping, the relaxing hammocks…all say Caribbean Vacation!! We truly felt removed from the hustle and bustle of Disney that we feel when we stay at the value resorts.

2. The main pool – Just check out this fantastic pool! Need I say more. I really thought the kids would love the ship-wreck splash pad, but they preferred the main pool with it’s pirate fort feel. They loved the water slide and the pool-side activities.

3. The recreational activities offered – Since we only stayed for one night, we didn’t get a chance to ‘play’ with the extra recreational activities offered at Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort. However, the options were plentiful if we had had more time. From bikes and surreys to sail boats, paddle boats, and more, there are plenty of ways to spend your ‘down’ days at this beautiful resort. (Please note, all of the above are rentals, and not included in the price of your resort stay.)

4. The Pirate Room, of course! – I’ve blogged about our stay in the Pirate Room so I’ll just link it here. But, it was definitely a highlight of our stay.

Foodie Friday - Mickey’s Backyard BBQ

Where is it? The Campsites at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort

Who’s there? Mickey, Minnie, Chip, Dale, and other live entertainment

What is there to eat? BBQ chicken and ribs, of course! Guests can also enjoy hot dogs, hamburgers, mac-n-cheese, veggies, salad, cornbread and so much more. For dessert, guests can choose from an array of ice cream bars and popsicles.

When? Available only for dinner seasonally

Why? Because it is oh-so-fun!! Just look at the pictures I took when we ate here for the first time on our Sept. 2011 trip. The kids loved watching the trick roper. The music and dancing was super fun. And, dancing with the characters – even better! (The characters do not come to each table as they do in other restaurants. But, they do line up outside the pavilion for autographs and photos if you wish to stand in line.)
Be sure to watch the video to the end for a funny surprise for my sweet Em.

What do we think about it? We really enjoyed ourselves the night we went. Typically, I don’t spend two table-service credits on a meal, but since my oldest went home early we had extra credits. So, we splurged on this dinner show. The food was pretty good, and the atmosphere was much better. I would recommend trying this dinner show at least once! It’s loads of fun.

{Tip Tuesday} I forgot my Key to the World!

Picture this:

You spend the morning at the Magic Kingdom, and you’re so excited because it’s your birthday and it’s Extra Evening Magic Hours day. (How’s that for a run-on sentence. Sorry Mrs. Lunsford!) So, you shepherd the kids back to the resort for a midday nap. After said nap, you shuffle them back out the door, onto the bus, and back to your very favorite theme park in the whole wide world! You start digging through your camera bag for everyone’s Key to the World (which happens to hold your theme park admissions), only to realize the one you used to open the door to your room earlier in the day is still sitting on the table in your room where you put it before you crashed for a nap!

You can:

a. get back on the bus, run to your room, run back on the bus, and grumpily head back into the park

b. stand there in the middle of the bus terminal scratching your head and wondering what to do

-- OR --

c. head straight to Guest Services where they will happily don their super hero capes and print you a new KTTW so you and your family can continue on the way to having a magical day!!

CHOOSE C!!! Don’t ask me how I know… People are known to do silly things when they’re sleep deprived and floating on a cloud of pixie dust and Dole Whips!!

{ABC’s of Disney} L is for Logan!!

I’m all caught up now!! I love Heidi’s Destination Disney meme! What a great way to showcase the thousands (yep, thousands) of pictures I take each time we visit Disney World!!

L is for Logan. First of all, he’s a teenager – and he RUNS from the camera anytime I have it out. I threatened him before we left for Disney that if he didn’t let me take pics during this trip, I was going to take his keys!! (I wouldn’t really, but I really wanted pictures of him!) He was only able to join us for the first 4 days of our two week trip, because he’s taking classes at the local college this year. So, he had to come back for class. And, since he graduates this year, this may be his last UFT trip with us. So, here is a my handsome guy enjoying himself on our Disney vacation.

Caribbean Beach Resort (Pt. 1) ~ The Pirate Room!!

During our last trip to Walt Disney World, I surprised the kids with a one-night stay at the Caribbean Beach Resort. To make it even better, we stayed in a Pirate Room! When I went to Walt Disney World last December for training, I got to tour a Pirate Room. I knew immediately that I wanted to stay here some time with Isaac (and the other kiddos, of course)!

As I was planning our trip, I discovered that it would be cheaper to fly out a day earlier than I originally booked our package. As I was talking to hubby about my options, I mentioned just booking a room-only (no tickets or dining) for an extra night to save money. When he asked where I was going to stay, I told him that I was just going to book a room at All-Star Music, and I would switch rooms the next day. He suggested I stay somewhere I wouldn’t normally stay as a treat. So, I told him how much I wanted to stay in a Pirate Room, and he told me to go for it! So, I did!!

Obviously, the resort has a tropical theme with villages with such names as Martinique, Barbados, Trinidad and more. We stayed in the Trinidad area.

Upon arrival, we arrived at Custom House to check in. By this point, the kids had figured out the surprise. It’s kind of hard to keep the secret when I have to stand in a line with a sign that says ‘Online Check-In’. So, we got our Keys to the World, our map, and headed on our way.

We took the bus to the Trinidad area. Caribbean Beach is such a large property that it has an internal bus system to navigate between the different areas in the resort. Our room was pretty close to our village’s quiet pool and the bus stop.

Our room was incredible! The kids loved the beds that were shaped like ships. I am always amazed at the amount of detail that Disney puts into absolutely everything! The carpets look like planks. The dresser looks like stacks of crates. The refrigerator is hidden in a ‘keg’.

The ‘crates’ are the dresser, and the ‘keg’ hides the fridge.

How awesome are the beds!?!

The vanity area – notice the double sinks. You won’t find these in a value resort.

The kids got a kick out of the carpet.

We didn’t spend much time in our room, because the pool and resort property are so beautiful. But, I’ll write more about that later.

{ Tip Tuesday } What are Extra Magic Hours?

Extra Magic Hours are one of the perks Disney offers to its resort guests. Each day, one of Disney’s four parks is open an hour early or up to three hours late for resort guests only. Not all rides and attractions are open during Extra Magic Hours, but it’s nice to be able to enjoy the shorter lines and smaller crowds during these times.

We always try to take advantage of the Extra Magic Hours during our park visits. We especially enjoy it when Epcot® has Evening Extra Magic Hours. When we visit in September, Epcot® tends to be open until midnight on Fridays (or at least it’s been that way for the past three trips). We love to get there early in the morning and explore Future World. Then, we head back to our resort after lunch for a nap. (This is the only time we typically head back for a nap.) Later, we head back to Epcot® all refreshed and ready to shut the park down at midnight with our good friends. My kids love being able to hop on their favorite rides over and over and over late at night.

Well, some of them anyway… Not everyone can make it to midnight at Epcot®…

As we prepare for our upcoming Walt Disney World vacation, we are getting excited about all of our favorites. I thought I’d share our favorites from Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

Our favorite thrill ride (or Isaac’s anyway) – Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster

{ABC’s of Disney} G is for Gingerbread!

Oh my word!! When I was in Walt Disney World last year in December, I was amazed at the gingerbread displays in various places.

In Disney’s Grand Floridian, guests can see a beautiful 16-foot gingerbread house. This house is made using 800 pounds of flour, 600 pounds of sugar, and 1,050 pounds of honey! It is absolutely stunning!

I also got to see the Gingerbread Carousel at Disney’s Beach Club Resort. It was even more stunning than the gingerbread house. I am utterly amazed by the detail and attention that goes into every inch of this carousel. Check these pictures out!

{Think about it} What to do on non-park days…

This year, we are going to Walt Disney World for 14 days! This is our longest stay to date, and I am so excited! We bought 10-day tickets with the Water Park Fun & More add-on for our trip. So, what are we going to do on our non-park days?
On our first day, we will have a pool day. I’m actually surprising the kids with one night in a Pirate Room at Disney’s Caribbean Beach resort before we transfer to Disney’s All-Star Music resort for the rest of our stay. We will explore the resort grounds and hang pool-side for the day.

On our second day, we will go to Downtown Disney and explore DisneyQuest ®. The boys are pretty excited about this. I’m not a gamer, but we’ve heard so much about it that we want to check it out. We plan to head to DisneyQuest® early in the day to beach the crowds.
On our third non-park day, we will spend the day at one of the water parks until early afternoon. I plan to let the kids play mini-golf before we head back to our room to clean up. Then, we plan to head to Downtown Disney to meet some of the gals I work with for a late lunch. Isaac will then head over to DisneyQuest again to celebrate his buddy’s birthday while Emma and I head to Disney’s Ft. Wilderness for the campfire sing-along and movie.

Our last non-park day is a kids’ choice day. They will have the option of visiting a water park or DisneyQuest or hanging at the resort pool. Or, they could choose all of the above. It’s up to them. That’s the beauty of an extended stay. It will have a much more relaxed atmosphere than our shorter stays when we try to see it all and do it all in 7 days.
I CAN’T WAIT!!
What else could we do on our non-park days?

We could visit Disney’s BoardWalk. We could see the street performers or try some new snacks.
We could tour some of our favorite resorts. Resorts like Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge, Wilderness Lodge, Grand Floridian, and Yacht Club offer FREE tours that are open to any Disney resort guest. Check in advance to see if these tours require a reservation.
We could head to Disney’s Polynesian Resort, Grand Floridian, Wilderness Lodge, Ft. Wilderness, or Contemporary to watch the Electrical Water Pageant.
We could go to Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge to hang out in the viewing animals. Grab a snack and watch the wildlife. How relaxing!

When we travel to Walt Disney World in September, it’s still pretty hot. Therefore, we try to stay cool by drinking as much water as possible throughout the day. I don’t want to waste my snack credits on bottled water while I’m there, though. And, I don’t want to weigh down our backpacks with bottled water from home. So, how do we stay hydrated?

We learned, after our first trip, that quick-service restaurants and snack carts that serve drinks will give guests free cups of water. What!?! Free stuff at Walt Disney World? Yes, you heard me right. You can walk into the quick-service restaurants or up to snack carts and ask for cups of water. You don’t even have to order food to get the water.

Now, I do have a little princess that does not like ‘white’ water. So, we stock up on drink mix pouches before heading to Walt Disney World. These little packets are easy to carry in our backpacks while visiting the parks, and they don’t weigh us down. And, they get my princess to stay hydrated with her free cup of ‘flavored’ water! It’s a win-win!!

{Crafts} Sharpie Tie-Dyed Shirts

I saw a post a few weeks ago about making tie-dyed Mickey Mouse tees with Sharpie markers, and I knew I wanted Emma to try it out. I’m not a huge fan of tie-dye in any form. I, personally, won’t wear it. But, I new my crafty princess would get a huge kick out of it, and I was sooooo right!
Here’s how we did it:
1. We purchased new white tees from Hobby Lobby last week when they were on sale.
2. We chose cups to use as the circle forms. Then, take the cup chosen for the Mickey head, and wrap your tee around it. Use a rubber band to hold it in place.

3. Using Sharpie markers, draw dots and/or dashes around the edge of the cup. Make sure the marker is soaking in to the shirt.

4. Using a dropper, drip isopropyl alcohol on the marker dots. The colors will begin to bleed into each other and spread out in a fan around the circle.
5. Once the first circle was done, I let the shirt sit for a minute or two to allow it to begin to air dry just a bit before moving on to Mickey’s ‘ear’.

6. When it’s done, you should pop it in the drier for a few minutes to heat-set the colors before washing it. Here’s Emma’s final product! My sample shirt is below, too.

If you’re not a Mickey fan (GASP!!), you can certainly try other shapes and designs. Emma’s friend tried various shapes in her circles.

Instead of Mickey Mouse, she made a super cute smiley face on hers!

{Tip Tuesday} Laundry at Disney??

Yes, I’m talking about laundry. In years past, I have laughed at friends who have mentioned doing laundry while on vacation in Walt Disney World. Laundry at Disney World? Are you crazy? I’m on vacation!

This year, we are staying for 13 nights – our longest trip to date. We are flying Air Tran which has a checked bag fee. It may be quite difficult to pack 14 outfits/shoes/accessories in a carry-on bag. So, for the first time ever, I’m planning to do laundry while on vacation.

I plan to only bring what I can fit in our carry-on luggage. I’ll also pack some Purex laundry sheets so I don’t have to purchase detergent at my resort. I’ll toss a few rolls of quarters in my suitcase, as well, since it costs $2 to wash and $2 to dry a load of clothes. Hopefully, I can get by with two loads (one for lights/whites and one for darks) during my stay. We’ll hang poolside while the laundry is washing/drying.

We’ll keep our dirty clothes in a collapsible mesh laundry bag that I’ll bring from home. Because the bag is lightweight, I can just carry it to the laundry room and back on laundry day. By spending a little time doing laundry on vacation, I can save at least $50 in checked bag fees! I’d say it’s worth it. Wouldn’t you?

{ABC’s of Disney} E is for Epcot

My kids do not enjoy the World Showcase in Epcot. They love all the rides throughout both sides, but they don’t like touring the countries. When we head to Disney World in September for the Ultimate Field Trip, I’m going to have to come up with a way to keep them entertained so I can tour the countries. I do enjoy that part. We’ve tried doing Kim Possible, but they didn’t like that either. So, this year, I’m thinking about doing a candy crawl. Maybe we’ll try candies from each of the countries they let me visit. I don’t know. Any suggestions?
Anyway, here are some things we love about Epcot:

Magical Memory Monday - Birthday Celebration

During our first trip to Walt Disney World, we celebrated some birthdays. We have several spring/summer birthdays in our extended family. So, during our trip, we ordered a birthday cake for one of our dinners. It was a complete surprise for the kids. Is there anything better than celebrating a birthday during your Walt Disney World vacation?

{ABC’s of Disney} D is for Downtown Disney

I’ll admit it. I’m not a huge fan of Downtown Disney. One reason is because there are so many stores where I like to shop. And, we usually hit Downtown Disney after a full day in the parks. So, of course, by that time I am absolutely, utterly exhausted. There is nothing I want to do at that point but go to bed! However, we hit it every year, because there are several places my kids MUST go.

Emma loves the My Little Pony stuff-a-box area. We went in 2009, and she had a blast! We had the best Cast Member help us out. She helped make sure we got all the princess accessories for Em’s ponies. Then, she stuffed the box for us. There was absolutely NO WAY I could get the ponies and all their accessories in that box!

Isaac really enjoyed making his own light saber. There are instructions on which pieces to choose from each step of the way, and Isaac loved the final project.

Isaac’s other favorite place to go is to the Lego Store. He loved making his own little mini-figures at the store. It was his first time in a Lego Store, and it actually brought tears to his eyes. He said it was a dream come true.

Other things I love that I don’t have pictures of… free samples from Ghirardelli, the Lego sculptures, and the spitting Stitch on top of the World of Disney store.

This year, we are excited to visit DisneyQuest. I can’t wait to blog about that one when we get back. I’m also anxious to eat at Earl of Sandwich which a coworker of mine raves about.

{Foodie Friday} More Dining Choices

Last week, I talked about some of the places we’re eating during our September trip to Walt Disney World. Some are places we’ve eaten before, some are new, and some are new experiences. Today, I’ll talk about a few more of our upcoming plans.

We’ve eaten at the Crystal Palace in Disney’s Magic Kingdom. We ate dinner there a few years ago, and this year we’ll try their breakfast buffet. I love the Pooh characters, and am looking forward to this meal on our very last day.

One of our favorite places to eat, and one we’ve enjoyed every year to date, is dinner at O’hana. This year, we will be eating breakfast there with other homeschool families joining us for the Ultimate Field Trip 2011. I’m looking forward to enjoying a new character meal.

I had the pleasure of dining at 50’s Prime Time Café when I went for training in December. I can’t wait to take my kids there in September. They’re going to have a blast. I sure hope our ‘Auntie’ tries to make Emma eat some veggies. I’m thinking I’ll have to have my video camera handy for that night.

Last year, we had breakfast at 1900 Park Fare. This year, we are having dinner there. I ate there last year during training. The Stepmother and Stepsisters are absolutely hysterical, and I can’t wait to take the kids there. Who know, Isaac may catch the eye of a Stepsister or two.

{Foodie Friday} All Dining Reservations Complete!!

So, you already know we’re headed to Walt Disney World in September for the Ultimate Field Trip! We have never traveled to Walt Disney World without a dining plan. This year is no exception. We got free quick-service dining by staying in a value resort, but we opted to upgrade to the Disney Dining Plan so we could enjoy the sit-down meals. One of my favorite things to plan for our trip is where we will eat! This year, my oldest is only staying 4 or 5 of the 12 nights of our vacation. So, we have his extra dining credits to use while we’re there. This means, we are trying some 2-credit restaurants during our upcoming trip (more about those on another post).

We are trying LOTS of new places this year. Some of these places I visited during my training in December, but they’ll be new to the kids. Some we’ve visited for different meals (like breakfast instead of dinner). A few we’ve visited before, but most are brand new to all of us. I’m so excited! I’ll write a little about our dining plans each Friday until our trip. Then, when we return, I’ll post reviews of each of the places we visit during our vacation. Today, I’ll talk about two of the places that none of us have eaten.

One of the new places we are trying is Disney’s Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater in Disney’s Holloywood Studios™. Isaac has wanted to try this restaurant for the past few years, and it has just not worked out. But, this year it will. He’s going to be so excited! Modeled after old drive-in theaters, we’ll get to sit in our “50’s convertible” tables and watch sci-fi and monster films from the 50’s and 60’s as we enjoy our dinner. I hear they’re famous for their mill shakes, so we’ll definitely have to give them a try!

Another new restaurant we are trying is Teppan Edo in the Japan pavilion in Epcot® It’s a hibachi grill where the chefs cook your food at your table. It’s been a long time since we’ve eaten at a Japanese restaurant so I’m excited about giving this one a try. I’m looking forward to the entertaining chefs who quick-chop the veggies and toss shrimp in the air to catch it in their hats. I think the kids will get a big kick out of this one.

{Think About It} Rainy Disney Days

When it rains in Walt Disney World, do you head back to your room? Do you duck in a shop to dodge the rain? Or do you take advantage of short lines and ride your favorite attractions?

It doesn’t usually rain for long in Florida. We tend to have heavy, short showers. We don’t let it ruin our day. We pull out our ponchos and take advantage of shorter lines.

In years past, we have stocked up on Dollar Tree ponchos. I typically buy 4 for each person, and I make sure everyone has one in their backpacks for the day. When the rain passes, we just throw our ponchos away. I usually have to knot them in the back for the kids.

This year, I will be buying ponchos at Walt Disney World. My neighbor gave me two Mickey ponchos she purchased at Walt Disney World YEARS ago. One is in great condition, and the other is ripped. The nice thing about the ponchos purchased in the theme parks is that if they rip, Disney will replace them for free. So, I’ll replace the one my friend purchased, and I’ll buy one for the rest of the family. And, I’ll have them for years to come.

Now, once we have our ponchos on, we’re good to go. Normally, we head deeper into the parks to ride our favorite rides. If the rain lasts for a good while, we may duck into a restaurant to grab a quick bite to eat or head into a shop to browse. We’ve only headed back to our rooms once during a downpour. On this day, we had planned a midday nap so we could enjoy the Extra Magic Hours at Epcot. The little ones were whiney so we just headed back a little early for our naps.

{Travel Tips} When should you go?

So, we’ve got our countdown hung on the mantle. The kids are tearing off a link each morning as we prepare for our upcoming Disney vacation. But, before we head out for our Disney vacation, I do a LOT of pre-planning. The first step, of course, is to pick our dates.

That’s actually the easy part for us. 3D Travel Company, the company I work for, hosts an annual homeschool event called the Ultimate Field Trip each year the week of Labor Day. So, of course, I plan my vacation around those dates. This year, we are heading down a few days early so my oldest, who is taking dual-enrollment classes at the local community college, can join us for a few days. Since he’s off for Labor Day on Monday, we will go down the weekend before UFT so he can spend a few days with us. He’ll go back early, and my other two children and I will stay for a bit longer. My boss chose these September dates because of the low crowd counts. Most schools are back in session (including the locals) so the lines are shorter than at other times throughout the year.

If you aren’t going in September, when should you go? Well, ummm…, it’s Disney!! There is no ‘wrong’ time to go. However, there are many things to consider when choosing your dates. What’s your biggest concern? Are you going for an event – a marathon, the Food & Wine Festival? Do you want to avoid large crowds? Do you want to avoid the heat or the cold temperatures? Do you want to see the Christmas decorations? Do you want to attend Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party?

{Magical Memory Monday} Tom Sawyer Island

In 2009, we visited Tom Sawyer Island. The kids enjoyed walking across the bridges and exploring the caves. When we visit again this year, we hope to find one of the six paintbrushes hidden around the island. {ABC’s of Disney} B is for Blizzard Beach

I must admit that I have never been to a Disney water park. For the first time ever, we are purchasing the Water Park Fun & More Option when we visit Walt Disney World in September. The kids and I are so excited! We plan to visit both water parks, and we hope to go to both twice during our stay.

Back in December during training, I had the opportunity to tour Disney’s Blizzard Beach Water Park – which was the appropriate choice since it was FREEZING in Florida that week. (But don’t worry. If you visit Disney’s Blizzard Beach Water Park or Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon Water Park during the winter season, the water is heated to a warm 80 degrees!) Anyhow, here are some pictures that I took during my tour. I can’t wait to head over there in just a couple months!

Just like you can find at each of the four theme parks, Disney’s Blizzard Beach Water Park has a map and tip board. On this board you can find wait times, ride descriptions, and other pertinent information.

“Polar Patios” are available for rent at Disney’s Blizzard Beach Water Park. Each space can be rented per day for up to six guests. Services include a personal attendant, private lockers, drink mugs, bottled water, and much more.

The Tikes Peak children’s area is just that. An area geared for children under 48”. Little ones can enjoy interactive fountains, a wading pool, and more.

Have children that are in that in be’tween’ age groups? Well, there’s an area just for them, as well. Disney does a great job of gearing everything they do to guests of ALL ages. The Ski Patrol Training Camp is aimed at tweens.

With rides like Summit Plummet, the Slush Gusher, Melt Away Bay, and Cross Country Creek, there really is something for everyone. I can’t wait to visit this water park with my kids! I’ll be sure to report back on our favorite parts of the water park.

{Magical Memory Monday} A Fond Farewell

With the new Fantasyland expansion underway, I thought I’d take a picture trip down memory lane. While we will miss Mickey & Minnie’s houses, the judge’s tent, and the rest of Mickey’s Toontown Fair, we are very much looking forward to a new restaurant in the Beast’s castle, a Snow White-themed roller coaster, and (my favorite) a Little Mermaid ride!

{Travel Tip Tuesday} Counting Down to Disney

So, we’ve nailed down our travel dates. I’ve started watching prices for airline tickets. I’ve made my dining reservations. And, I’ve started planning our park days. Now, it’s time to get the kids involved.
This weekend, I had the kids make their Disney countdown chain. I cut strips of construction paper (red, yellow, white, and black) to correlate with the number of days until our trip.

Now, the kids will take turns each morning tearing off a chain link. When we get to the end, we’ll be on our way!! How do you count down your Disney vacation?

{Magical Memory Monday} UFT 2010 Mega Meet

As we begin counting down to our next trip, which happens to be UFT 2011 in September, I’m looking back at UFT 2010.

The company I work for, 3D Travel Company, hosts the Ultimate Field Trip each year at Walt Disney World. On Labor Day, we hosted a Mega Meet at Disney’s Polynesian Resort. At the Mega Meet, we do just that… Meet. I enjoyed meeting the families of the other ladies I work with (we’re internet based and spread out across the country). I enjoyed meeting other homeschool families who were joining us for UFT 2010. I loved watching my kids reconnect with kids they had met the previous year at UFT 2009.

At the Mega Meet, each family received a backpack (all of which I embroidered for the group). Each backpack held little goodies for the family and a list of additional meet-ups throughout the week. The backpacks were the perfect size for the kiddos to carry their belongings in throughout the parks for the rest of their vacation, as well.

The Mega Meet is a great time to introduce yourself (and your kids) to others who are attending UFT. Then, it’s fun to run into a familiar face as you are touring the parks. We also knew to look for the backpacks as a sure sign that the family was with our group. It’s a great way to kick off the week of UFT.

Here are my nieces getting ‘pixie dusted’ by Princess Stephanie at UFT 2010.

All of our group activities during UFT are FREE. (Well, if we meet for a cupcake at Starring Rolls in Disney’s Hollywood Studios™, you will have to purchase your own food.) They are completely optional. Last year, I had a large group with me at UFT, and we didn’t make all the meet-ups. But, we really enjoyed the ones we did.

This year's Mega Meet is scheduled for Sept. 5, 2011 from 7:00-8:00 at Disney's Polynesian Resort. I'd love to meet you there!

{Tip Tuesday} The Enchanted Tiki Room

I must admit that the Enchanted Tiki Room – Under New Management is NOT one of my favorite Walt Disney World attractions. Honestly, I find it quote annoying. It is one that I tolerate, however, because my princess likes it. Earlier this year, it closed for refurbishment after a fire broke out in the attraction and damaged some of the animatronic creatures. Word has it, though, that the attraction will reopen in August. It seems that it will no longer be under new management. Disney is reportedly taking the show back to it’s original roots and will do so without Iago and Zazu.
Do you enjoy this attraction? I’m excited to see it in it’s new (old) form when we go in September.

{Foodie Friday} Cape May Cafe

Tucked away inside Disney’s Beach Club Resort, guests can enjoy eating at Cape May Café. Here, one can enjoy a lovely breakfast or dinner buffet in a beautiful seaside setting. Several characters make an appearance (dressed ready for the beach, of course) at breakfast.

As you can see in the photo to the right, the character breakfast buffet offers traditional foods such as Mickey waffles, fresh-baked pastries, fresh fruit and yogurt bar. You can also enjoy eggs and breakfast meats.
The dinner seafood buffet offers crab legs, clams, mussels, carved meats, and more.
Characters are available for autographs during the breakfast hours only. They do not make appearances during the dinner hours.

Advanced dining reservations are recommended at this location. Cape May Café is on the Disney dining plan, and requires one table-service credit per diner.
I have eaten the breakfast and dinner buffets. I prefer the breakfast buffet. I was not impressed with the dinner offerings, though I have friends who enjoy dinner here.

{Foodie Friday} Good Morning Gathering at Tony’s

Have you heard of Disney’s Grand Gatherings? Your party is considered a Grand Gathering if you have eight or more people staying at a Walt Disney World resort.

So, you’ve got eight or more people in your group. Why do you want to be a Grand Gathering? You want to be a GG, because your group can experience some special events that are designed specifically for groups. There are a variety of experiences that your Travel Agent (that’d be me) can book for you. These events include the International Dinner and Illumi-Nations Desert Reception, a Good Morning Gathering, a Safari Celebration Dinner, and the Pirate & Pals Voyage.

On our last trip, we were a Grand Gathering. We had a party of 13! We chose to experience a Good Morning Gathering character breakfast at Tony’s Town Square. Breakfast at Tony’s is fantastic! It’s served family style – bacon, eggs, sausage, pastries, etc. During breakfast, the characters come around to your table for hugs and autographs. When we went (we’ve actually been twice), the characters included Donald, Daisy, Mickey, Minnie, Pluto, Goofy, and Tony himself. Toward the end of breakfast, Tony recognizes those celebrating birthdays and anniversaries. Then, he calls the kids to the front of the restaurant for the Hokey Pokey with the characters. As your dining experience comes to an end, each guest will receive an exclusive trading pin which acts as a FastPass for Mickey’s Philharmagic.

Tony’s Town Square Restaurant accepts the Disney Dining Plan. It counts as one table-service credit per diner. Tony’s only serves breakfast to those with a Grand Gathering reservation. It is open to everyone else for lunch and dinner.

{Think About It} How do you do the parks?

By that I mean, do you get there early, play all day, and close the parks down? Do you go back to your resort mid-day and take a break? Do you play it by ear and go with the flow? Believe it or not, this is a highly debated topic among die-hard Disney fans.
Here’s how we do it…
I get up in the morning as early as I can, and hop in the shower. Then, I head to the food court to grab breakfast for my family. They eat while I fix my hair and do my makeup. I eat while they get dressed and ready for the parks (they’ve showered and packed backpacks the night before). Then, we all head out. I have tried every time to get to a park for a rope drop. I have made it ONCE! (So, that shows I’m not getting up early enough. )

Typically, we plan to stay at the parks until the nighttime fireworks. My kids are now older, and they can make it all day long (most days). When we get hungry, we stop for a snack. When we get hot, we head indoors or onto a wet ride. But, we don’t typically head back to the resort for a mid-day nap/break. There is so much to do and see at Disney that we don’t want to miss it.
There are two exceptions to our ‘rule’. If I see my youngest is tired/whiny/miserable, we will probably head back earlier than I had planned or take a break. I don’t want us all to be miserable.
Also, I do head back to our resort on the day we visit Epcot. We tend to only spend one day in Epcot. And, we only visit Epcot on the day it offers Evening Extra Magic Hours (meaning it tends to be open until midnight). My children do not enjoy The World Showcase (gasp!!), but they do like the rides in the rest of the park. So, we typically hit the World Showcase in the morning, and head back to the resort about lunch time. We then head back to Epcot to ride the rides until the park closes. After a midday nap on this particular day, my Princess is ready for a late night.

This was the first time we visited Epcot during EEMH, and Emma conked out while the boys rode their very last ride. She aallmmoosstt made it to the end of the night with no rest time.

Once you factor in walking back to the park entrance, riding the bus to the resort, and doing the same in reverse to get back to the park, that’s a lot of hours we’ve ‘missed’ in the parks. Last year I asked my middle son if he wanted me to schedule more time in our days to hang poolside during our stay. To which he responded, “Mom, I do NOT go to Disney World to swim!”. So, there ya go. We all try to spend ALL of our time in the parks while we’re there. We sleep in the morning after Epcot, but we figure we can catch up on our sleep when we get back home. We go to play, and play we do!
